This is a figure for a model I developed using COMSOL Multiphysics. It is of a high temperature superconducting (HTS) cable system. Note that this is not to scale. The HTS cable is seen in the bottom center portion of the figure with copper terminals on either side. Because it is a superconductor, it needs to be really cold in order to operate. This is why the cable is surrounded by cold helium gas flowing at 1.2 m/s. There is also a heat exchanger used to extract the heat generated by Joule heating. The entire system is surrounded by a vacuum jacket to prevent heat from leaking in from the ambient environment.
